The Wisdom of Water: The King of Cups
There’s something about being surrounded by the ocean that makes the energy of Water hard to ignore.
In tarot, Water is connected to our emotions, intuition, relationships, creativity, compassion, and the deeper parts of ourselves that aren’t always easy to put into words. It is the element of the Cups, and it reminds us that our emotional world is just as much a part of our human experience as our thoughts and actions.
But Water has another lesson for us: it moves.
It can be calm or turbulent. It can flow around obstacles, change direction, or slowly shape something solid over time. Our emotions can be much the same. We aren't meant to stay stuck in one emotional state forever. We experience, we feel, we process, and eventually, we move forward.
Which brings me to the King of Cups.
The King of Cups represents emotional maturity. He doesn't deny his feelings, but he also doesn't allow every feeling to take the wheel. He understands that being emotionally grounded doesn't mean being emotionless.
It means learning how to feel deeply without being ruled by what you feel.
And honestly, what better place to think about the King of Cups than sitting above the ocean?
Life isn't always calm. Neither are our emotions. There will be waves, storms, and days when everything feels unsettled. The goal isn't to stop the waves.
The goal is to learn how to stay grounded while they move around us.
Maybe that's one of Water's greatest lessons:
Feel it. Honor it. Learn from it. Then let it move.
And sometimes, like the King of Cups, we simply need to sit with the waves and remember that we don't have to control the water to navigate it.
