Witch Trials #3: Can Tarot Really Predict the Future?

Here's a question that comes up almost every time someone finds out I read tarot:

"Can tarot really predict the future?"

My honest answer?

Yes...and no.

I know—that's probably not the straightforward answer you were expecting.

But after years of working with tarot, I've had several readings where something the cards showed did happen later. So I can't honestly tell you that tarot never predicts something that comes to pass.

But I also don't believe the future is a single, predetermined script that the cards simply reveal to us.

And that's where things get interesting.

The Myth

"Tarot tells you exactly what is going to happen."

The Facts

Many tarot practitioners use the cards in very different ways.

Some use them specifically for divination and forecasting. Some look for likely outcomes. Others use tarot primarily for spiritual guidance, self-reflection, or understanding the energy surrounding a situation.

There isn't one universal way to read tarot.

Personally, I prefer to work with what I think of as the projected future.

In other words, the cards can show us the energy and circumstances that are present right now and where those things may be leading if nothing changes.

But "if nothing changes" is a pretty important part of that statement.

Because people change things.

We make choices. We change our minds. We take opportunities. We walk away from situations. We gain confidence. We lose confidence. Life throws something completely unexpected at us.

And suddenly, the projected future can look very different.

I've Seen Tarot Get It Right - many times. 

I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

There have been times when I've pulled cards and later watched the situation unfold in a way that was remarkably similar to what the cards suggested.

Could that be coincidence?

Could it be intuition?

Could the cards have picked up on circumstances that were already developing?

Could there be something more spiritual happening?

Honestly, I don't think we always have to know the answer.

I think it's okay to leave some mystery in the practice.

What I do know is that those experiences are part of why I respect tarot and continue to find it fascinating.

But even when a reading seems incredibly accurate, I don't believe that means we have been handed an unchangeable destiny.

Sometimes, We Don't Need to Know

This is another reason I don't believe every question needs to be answered by tarot.

Sometimes, knowing exactly what is going to happen isn't necessarily helpful.

There are experiences we are meant to live through rather than preview.

Sometimes the uncertainty is part of the journey.

And sometimes, knowing an outcome too early could influence the very choices that lead us there.

Instead of asking, "Exactly what will happen?", I often find a more useful question is:

"What energy is surrounding this situation, and what can I do with it?"

That question gives our power back to us.

What I Prefer to Look For

When I'm reading for someone, I'm much more interested in the energy that is currently in play and what we can learn from it.

Let's say the cards show an opportunity coming toward someone.

That's exciting—but maybe the conversation reveals that this person doesn't believe they're capable of taking it.

Now the most useful part of the reading isn't simply:

"You're going to get an opportunity."

It's:

"What is keeping you from believing you can say yes when it arrives?"

Maybe the cards show a period of growth, but the person is exhausted.

Maybe they show a new relationship, but the sitter is still carrying old patterns from the last one.

Maybe they suggest a career opportunity, but fear of failure is standing in the way.

The cards can open the conversation.

The conversation is where the real work begins.

So...Can Tarot Predict the Future?

Maybe.

Sometimes it certainly seems to.

But I don't believe tarot gives us a guaranteed, unchangeable preview of our lives.

I see it more as a way of looking at the road ahead.

The cards may show us what appears to be coming based on the energy and circumstances surrounding us now.

But we're still holding the steering wheel.

And sometimes the most valuable thing a reading can do isn't tell us what will happen.

It's help us recognize what we can change before it does.

The Verdict

Can tarot predict the future?

Yes...and no.

There are readers who use tarot specifically for prediction and divination, and there are readers who use it primarily for reflection, guidance, spirituality, or personal growth.

Neither approach has to be the only "right" way.

For me, tarot is most powerful when it helps us understand the present, recognize the possibilities ahead, and make more intentional choices about where we go from here.

The future isn't written in stone.

Maybe the cards can show us a possible chapter.

But we're still part of the story.
