As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, the excitement of Halloween begins to fill up the atmosphere.  Have you ever wondered about the origins of this holiday? Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, has deep roots that intertwine with ancient traditions, particularly the Celtic festival of Samhain.

Samhain, pronounced "sow-in", marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Celebrated from sunset on October 31st to sunset on November 1st, it was believed that during this time, the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest. Bonfires were lit and costumes worn to ward off wandering spirits, believing that souls of the deceased would return to visit their homes.

As Christianity spread across Europe, many traditions were absorbed into the new faith. The Church designated November 1st as All Saints Day. The night before, known as All Hallows' Eve (meaning Holy) , eventually morphed into Halloween.  The customs of Samhain, such as dressing up in costumes and lighting candles, seamlessly blended into this new celebration, creating a rich tapestry of traditions that we still recognize today.

Modern Halloween retains the echos of its Samhain origins. The practice of carving pumpkins, is thought to have evolved from the tradition of carving turnips. The turnips were carved to create lanterns to guide spirits home. Trick or treating has roots in "mumming", where people would dress up and go door to door to perform for food.

Today, Halloween is a celebration filled with costumes, candy ,and community spirit. A night for young and old alike to have fun and engage with play. However, in recalling the roots that it came from, we can see that it is not just a night of fun and folly, but also a celebration of the seasons. As fall turns to the quiet reflection of winter; Samhain also is a time for going within, honoring ancestors who have come before and moving with the cycles of life, death and the coming rebirth.

So, as you prepare for this years festivities, take a moment to reflect on the rich history that makes Halloween a truly Magical time of year.
